Received the Earldom of Flanders

Arnulf and his brother, Adolf, both inherited land when their father, Baldwin died in 917/918, but Arnulf received all the land when Adolf died sixteen years later. Arnulf fought against the Norse and took part in the power struggles between King Otto I and King Hugh Capet involving the territory of Lorraine.

Arnulf was Count of Flanders from 918 to 958, when he gave control of thegovernment over to his son, Baldwin III. However, Baldwin died in 962 and Arnulf resumed control to help secure the succession of his grandson, Arnulf II "the Young", as Count of Flanders.

Arnulf married Alice DE VERMANDOIS, daughter of Count Of Vermandois Herbert II DE VERMANDOIS and Adela-Hildebrante CAPET. (Alice DE VERMANDOIS was born about 910 in Vermandois, Neustria, died on 10 Oct 960 in Bruges, Aquitaine and was buried in St. Pierre Abbey, Gand, Flanders, France.)
