Nicknames as stated in different
sources: "Cropped Hat" "Capped Head"
3rd Earl of Arundel and
Warenne, 9th Earl of Surrey, Regent of England in 1335. His youngest son,
Thomas became Archbishop of Canterbury. Richard obtained his father's Earldom
and lands in 1331. He led one of the divisions of the English Army at Crecy and
took part in the siege of Calais. Fought in the naval battle with the Spaniards
off Winchelsea in August 1350.
He served as Admiral of the King's Whole
Fllet west of the Thames in England. He served as Constable in Porchester
Castle, England and as Governor in Caernarvon Castle, Wales. He also served as
Governor of Chirk Castle. Leader of English expeditions in Scotland and France.
He was the Earl of Surry (University of Hull, Tompsett). He was the third Earl
of Arundel and Warenne; Ninth Earl of Surrey. On December 4,1344 he obtained a
Papal mandate for the annulment of his marriage to Isabel on the ground of his
minority (about 8 at the time of the marriage) and that he had never consented
to the marriage. The Complete Peerage (1:243, noted) discusses this and
states"...Obviously what really happened was this. The powerful Earl desired to
get rid of the woman to whom he had been married as a child, and who, since her
father's attainder and execution, had ceased to be of any importance, that he
might marry the woman with whom he was then living in adultery; and the Pope
very obligingly annulled the marriage and bastardised the issue." [91502.ftw]
