John WASHINGTON
(1633-1677) |
Colonel John WASHINGTON
In 1674 John the emigrant and
Nicholas Spencer were granted 5000 acres along the Potomac River. In 1690 the
tract was divided between Lawrence, son of John and the heirs of Nicholas
Spencer. The Washington half of the grant, then known as Hunting Creek
Plantation, passed to Lawrence's daughter, Mildred. In 1726 Augustine, father of
George, purchased the plantation from Mildred and her husband Roger Gregory. In
1735 when George was 3 years old, Augustine moved his family from Pope's Creek
to Hunting Creek Plantation. Four years later they moved to Ferry Farm near
Fredericksburg. In 1740 Augustine deeded the plantation to his son Lawrence, who
had just come of age. By the time Lawrence married in 1743 he settled on the
estate and renamed it Mount Vernon in honor of Admiral Edward Vernon under whom
he served in the Carribean. Augustine died in 1743 and and his young son George
spent part of his youth with his elder half brother at Mount Vernon. In 1752
Lawrence died, and two years later George came into possession of Mount Vernon
by the purchase of the life interest of his brothers widow. When she died in
1761, George inherited the estate. John married Anne POPE on 1 Dec 1658. (Anne POPE was born about 1635.) |
