Kilmarnock, he was guilty of the slaughter of Neilson of Dalrymple in feud, for
which he obtained a remission from Robert, Duke of Albany, who was Governor of
Scotland in 1409. Also referred to as Sir Thomas De Haya, of Locherworth,
Sheriff of Peebles, married Joanna, eldest daughter and co-heir of Hugh Gifford,
of Yester, and with her acquired a part of the lands of Yester. The Marquess of
Tweeddale's (David Hay) eldest son is called Earl of Gifford. While in the
second of the Arms of the Marquess are the Arms of Gifford of Yester. It was
common at this time when a family had no surviving sons that the father's Arms
were incorporated into the husband of the eldest daughter.
